The aim of the KTP within the injection molding technique is to reach a better understanding of the processes with the help of new approaches to procedure descriptions of extra injection molding or to develop new extra injection molding procedures. Examples of extra injection molding procedures are gas injection molding and multi-component procedures, areas in which the KTP does a lot of research.

At the KTP there are three approaches to attain a description of the process:

  • The mathematic-physical depiction of the system
  • The theoretical transformation of operating points and plant components into a model
  • The experimental phenomenological or knowledge-based description of the system
Due to an optimized process control better molded part qualities can be achieved. Furthermore, the tasks of calculation and design of injection molding plasticizing units belong to the field of injection molding and their research results are summed up in the software program “PSI”. With PSI the plasticizing unit of an injection molding machine can optimize the cycle time, the material characteristics, the energy consumption etc. For the tool design we use the programs Moldflow (2,5 D) and Moldex3D (2,5 and 3 D). Foci:

  • Calculation of plasticizing units
  • Back flow valve (mold closing behavior and wear behavior)
  • Extra procedures (e.g. gas injection technique, 2K)
